Urban sprawl is bad; intellectual sprawl is good

Kathryn Winters (SI ‘92) appearing as a guest speaker for Social-Cognitive Psychology.

The email that I sent included the following:

As for the “what,” practically anything you talk about would be relevant and of high interest and value to my students. A non-exclusive list of topics includes:

  • your psycho-emotional experiences as a teenager at SI and as a member of the last all-male class
  • your lifelong gender identity formation (if you could/ would also speak about the differences between gender identity and sexual preference, that’d be helpful)
  • your experiences with friends, family, and work
  • your coming out
  • parenting as a trans woman (and whatever you can talk about in terms of your daughters’ experiences)
  • your work with SFPD
  • your activism with/ for the trans community

Being mindful that they’re 17 and it’s a Catholic school, anything you talk about would be valuable.

She was amazing. For an hour, she taught the students a number of important details and larger life lessons. I’m incredibly grateful for Kathryn’s generosity and openness.
