Though the Final Exam is in three days, I have finished teaching the first round of Ethnic Studies, a one-semester required course for all freshmen.

As part of the wrap-up day, where I offered a 5-minute review of the major topics and learning tasks for a unit and then had students discuss with each other the guiding questions for that unit, we had them complete an anonymous survey. Below are the questions and results [note: 1 = “Yes” and 5 = “No”]

In terms of the free-response, written comments to the question “Do you have anything else you’d like to mention?” most of the comments were quite positive. Of course, as a teacher, I can’t help but focus on the one negative comment.

I’m not sure that the social justice bias of the class “offended many people in the class,” but that was at least one student’s perception.
All in all (absent Final Exam scores…) the course seemed to go quite well.
