Urban sprawl is bad; intellectual sprawl is good

A desire for less hand-holding

The above came from a graduate of our school, now attending college, in response to a question about how well our school prepared them for college and how it could have better served them.

Seeing their response, I’m both relieved that our AP Psych class seems to serve students so well, and bothered a little by the disservice I do by being so helpful. Teaching 17- and 18-year olds is difficult because when they come in to the school year in August, they’re still in need of much support; but then, as they move toward graduation, they need to exercise their independence, free of such supports. It’s a tough line to walk — and I want to do better at it.
