Urban sprawl is bad; intellectual sprawl is good

invigilate (verb)

The fall 2015 final exams represent the third time I have given semester-ending summative exams online. To do this, students need to use an internet-connected device … and therein lies one significant challenge: what is to prevent students from using unauthorized materials during the exam?

Hence the word of the day: invigilate. Or, as our Director of Educational Technology and Innovation calls it, “the two feet and two eyes app.” I must trust my colleagues to constantly move about the room, monitoring students’ screens, ensuring that they are in the testing environment only.

Perhaps one day there will be a technical solution to this challenge, but the current solution is simply trusting colleagues to invigilate during exams.
