Urban sprawl is bad; intellectual sprawl is good

When Psychology teachers go on pilgrimage.

When I teach my students about this, I have two main points. One: the methodology was terrible. And, two: the ethics were worse. There is no way the study should have been approved or implemented; nor should it have gotten as far as it did.

Having said that, it’s still a landmark study. It did inform our analysis of the Abu Ghraib atrocities. We learned that a perfectly good apple is corrupted by the rotten barrel it finds itself in.

It’s also one of those, “lest we forget” sites. I’m glad the plaque is there; hopefully it will remind people of the lessons learned from the study-that-need-never-be-repeated.
