Urban sprawl is bad; intellectual sprawl is good

Beginning recovery

I felt well-enough today after my bike-commute home to go for a run. After reviewing the notes of my much-beloved Nurse Practitioner at Kaiser, I set my watch for a 15-minute run.

My lungs started burning at the 10-minute mark, which was just depressing. Without being able to run since partially tearing my left Achilles on a May 2 training run, I haven’t been able to do any cardio.1 I also took two mis-steps, slightly rolling my left ankle — neither hurt, as I just rolled through the mis-step, but both gave me a shot of adrenaline as I worried about re-injuring myself.

After returning to the apartment, I decided to do something that I rarely do… stretch. Despite running thousands of miles, I almost never stretch — and even more rarely do any other kind of fitness regimen other than just run. Today, I did a quick Google search based on an old article I remember reading, and pulled up a web-based timer for the 7-minute workout.

Based on that 7-minute workout: man, am I pathetic. But, it was “easy enough” to do (ie, there was no real barrier to actually doing the workout) that I’ll try to incorporate it into a post-run regimen.

We’ll see how this all goes.

  1. Biking to and from work doesn’t really count for cardio; it’s only a 20-minute ride, and, since I do it in shirt and tie, I keep the intensity quite low. ↩︎
