Over the weekend, I moved my blog, from a Wordpress install on a remote web-server that I was paying for, to Tumblr. In a previous post, I mentioned the difficulties in sustaining a long-form blog; I think Tumblr addresses many of the problems that I was having. I do have some misgivings about being on a platform that I don’t have control over, but the flip-side of that is the lack of maintenance duties I need to perform. A second advantage of using Tumblr is that it has a built-in follow/ subscribe mechanism, whereas far too few people use RSS in conjunction with their own feed reader. Finally, a mitigating factor in the lack-of-control issue is that Tumblr does allow full exports of all materials, so if I ever do need to leave, I can take my posts and put them up somewhere else.
If you’re a subscriber via my RSS feed, hopefully you won’t have to do anything different, as I use Feedburner there; if you subscribe to the feed, changing the target (from Wordpress to Tumblr) doesn’t matter. Finally, I’ll update my IFTTT recipes to continue pushing content from here to other channels (such as Twitter and Facebook) — but I won’t do that until I change the domain from tumblr.com to eecastro.com.
