Urban sprawl is bad; intellectual sprawl is good

In Gratitude… for Buffalo?

On Thursday, May 30, 2013, I found the above poster in my mailbox in the Faculty Lounge; there was neither a card nor any other indication of its origin.

I really like it! I like the colors (they match the palette of our apartment’s paint and furnishings), and I love the subject — for two reasons. One, I spend, and have spent, a lot of time in Golden Gate Park; first, as a kid, when my dad worked at Steinhart Aquarium, and now, when I go for long runs through it. Two, I really like buffalo. Some people fawn over babies, others collect cats, and still others are Dog People. Me? I like Bison bison. On my Bucket List is seeing herds of wild bison in Yellowstone.

What’s odd is that there are very few people who know/ knew this about me. And yet, someone bought for me the perfect poster: one of the buffalo in Golden Gate Park. That was incredibly sweet of the person — and I don’t even know who to thank for it.

Thanks, whoever you are. I really like my gift, and all that it represents — especially that you know me well enough to have chosen so wisely.
