First Track Meet Nervousness

This afternoon will be my first day as the official Course Recorder for the Jack Wilsey Track. In that capacity, I’ll be overseeing the timing of all track events and verifying all times with the finish line camera. And I’m incredibly nervous about it.

I’ve screwed things up with my students before. For example, ten-plus years ago, I gave a pop reading quiz to Freshmen, and then left the paperclipped stack of quizzes at a coffee shop where I’d been grading them. By the time I got back, the quizzes were gone, and the coffee shop staff hadn’t seen them/ didn’t have them. (I’ve always wonder who the heck took a stack of ancient world history quizzes, and what’d they do with them?) But losing those quizzes was an easy fix; I just told the students what’d happened … and then made them take the quiz again. (I know, I know — that was harsh.)

Running a race is different; I can’t exactly ask students to re-run a heat — not when they’ve poured everything they had into it already.

God, I hope all the equipment works…

I’m going out to the track a full 3-hours early to setup the equipment and pray…
