Urban sprawl is bad; intellectual sprawl is good

Tweets, Dreams, and Group Work

Day 3 went much closer to plan. The thing that’s so surprising about that is that guests had dropped by from Jesuit Portland and St Aloysius in Sydney. Class went according to plan in front of guests!? That never happens!

The Plan:

  1. Warm-up: “Tweet, in 140 characters or less, to the class hashtag the last (PG-13) dream that you remember.” #Castro1 #Castro2
  2. Analyze commonalities and discuss class dream tweets
  3. Lecture on major theories of dreams
  4. Introduce Drug Project
  5. Give students remainder of class to work on project with their group

Here’s what really happened:

This is much closer to what I’d like to see on a regular basis —combined, of course, with Monday’s class, which will consist of the students teaching each other about the drugs that they chose to research.

The class met the curricular outcomes in regards to understanding the major dream theories (well, I hope — we won’t know that for sure until the Chapter test on Day 2); students were engaged with the material and with each other; and we began a collaborative, multimedia project that will result in instruction on various consciousness-altering drugs. Not bad way to spend 60-minutes.
