Urban sprawl is bad; intellectual sprawl is good

New Year's Resolutions

It’s one of the traditions at my school to call the beginning of a new academic year, the “New Year.” Folks will walk around the halls, greeting each other, “Happy New Year!” in August, when school resumes after summer vacation.

Along those lines, I’d like to put down on record my New Year’s Resolutions for the 2012–2013 academic year:

  • No 12-hour days.
  • Eat lunch with colleagues.

I know, those are fairly basic; they seem like no-brainers, but you’d be surprised. I actually do have to publicly resolve to do these things based on how last year went for me. Last August, I lost 5-pounds, and was here for 12- and 14-hours regularly. I shouldn’t do that to myself again.
